Yet another radio code question

My mechanic replaced the master cylinder for my clutch. In the process he left the lights on and the battery ran dead. I have tried to enter the radio code several times but when I do it just comes back to "code".
I have done it several times and the same thing just keeps happening. Out of spite, I entered the wrong code, and it began beeping (indicating the wrong code had been entered) I held band down and could enter the correct code, but nothing happens.
I have had this in the past, but it always beeps and asks for the code and I enter it once and it works. Now the radio just sits there with code. Any suggestions?
By the way it is a 93 convertible.
Is it possible to put in an 89 radio? I think it is, but I hate to do it if I don't have to. Hopefully, the mechanic just entered the wrong code a couple of times and it will eventually reset.
Any help greatly appreciated.
