1979-1993 & 94 Conv [Subscribe to Daily Digest] |
finally updated the stereo on the 88 900 turbo conv this weekend.
had a spare Sony CD head unit already. only problem was (for me anyway) is that most all radios these days are all "funky" looking. this Sony was silver, which I didn't think would look good in the dash. so I took the face plate apart- removed the buttons, masked the display, and sanded and sprayed the plastic from silver to black. end result looks much more fitting in the dash.
ordered Polks from Crutchfield as they have front and rear on sale for $90 total. since I was ordering from there, I ordered their wiring harness for the stereo. I highly recommend it. I've installed several stereos before, so the process is not unfamiliar. but typically it involves snipping and crimiping/soldering wires at awkward angles in the dash, while guessing the wiring is correct. being able to do all these connections sitting at a desk, and not guessing at all about the connections while following Crutchfield's documentation was SO much easier. Then all it took was snapping them into place (and NOT butchering the car's wiring). I'm a big fan.
sound is much improved. interesting how unpowerful the stock clarion is, as I couldn't hear a huge difference imediately after replacing the dried out paper speakers with the Polks - they just weren't getting any power to them. once I put the new CD headunit in, the difference was of course, VERY noticeable. (the new unit probably would have highlighted how bad the factory speakers were even more so).
