big wet start problem this morning (kind of long!)

Weird first-time engine problem:
We had a monsoonal rain here in Rhode Island this morning. When I went out to start my 1984 900S, it didn't like it. Engine has always been very good in the rain and otherwise, starts up fine on damp mornings, wet mornings, below zero mornings, hot, etc. mornings, every kind of weather this area can throw at it.
But today, it had trouble turning over, and then just sort of chugged like it was running on one cylinder. Then it got a little better, but not much. I figured water got into something (fuel pump? something else?). I let it run VERY rough for a couple of minutes.
Then, a little smoke started coming out of the engine compartment. I had popped the hood after it stalled after the first start, but couldn't tell from the driver's seat where the smoke was originating. I kept it running a little longer, but it kept smoking more so I shut it off.
I got out and looked in the engine compartment and smoke seemed to be coming from up around the radiator and also at the back of the engine. I looked underneath and smoke was also originating around the catalytic converter. No clear point of origin, and I'm sure some was also coming from up front somewhere.
So I figured I had a major problem. Then I let it sit for a few hours, and when I started it back up about an hour ago, it ran like a top as usual. I ran a couple of errands with no problem.
Any ideas what happened?
Thanks in advance,
-jw
