A/C Recharge Question - Longish: Should I try using Posted by Wil W [Email] ![]() ![]() |
one of those DIY kits from local parts store to recharge my A/C? I had the A/C converted to R134 about 2 yrs ago by a former Saab shop (Quickie job with changing HP hose and some fittings, I'm not sure about 0 ring).
Anyway, my current mechanic saw the dye we put in during the conversion on the firewall by the compressor. He suggested I replace compressor myself and have him recharge it if I wanted A/C (he could source a "good" used Compressor and get me the 0 ring for ~$100 if I DIY, and $150 to recharge it). Anyway the other day I tried running the A/C to see what would happen, the A/C kicked in and I got a little cooling maybe a degree or two. My thoughts are it might be a small/slow leak since I still have a little freon after 2 yrs. So could I just use one of those $30 Recharge kits? Otherwise I'm looking at $250-300 at min to get A/C working again. Possibly another $200 if I change A/C pulley & Belt, HP manifold hose, Rec/Dryer, and Exp Valve as suggested. Possibly $450-500 for A/C in MN for an '89 SPG? Will a $30-40 kit work?
TIA,
Wil Wong
