My latest SAAB Lesson in Life.
Unless you're a masochist, let a professional mechanic do ball joints.
I'm doing the top & bottom ball joints on my 1990 SPG. I don't think my car has ever had the ball joints done, judging by the rust and bolt condition. 3 of the 4 A-Arm bolts snapped off with my impact wrench. That should have been forshadowing...
I've managed to shave off the top ball joint bolt flush using a grinder. I also (like a dumb@ss) cut off the top half, but not flush. I've used a propane/02 torch, used penetrating lube, and pounded. I've also tried twisting with a pipe wrench and a monkey wrench to no avail. I'd love to have that sucker pop out when I pound on it, so more pounding and lube tomorrow.
Once that one is done I can start the bottom. So far the nut won't turn at all. So more shots of Blaster and maybe it will turn.
The other pains:
tie rod end nut turns the whole tie rod. How do I get that sucker off without cutting that off, too?
ABS sensor won't come out. I pulled the bolt, tapped it, sprayed it, jiggled, pulled, and still no go.
The bonus, the hub nut came loose with no real problems (using 4 feet of pipe extension on my rachet).
Arghhh!!! Next time, the mechanic gets to do this job.
