Car pulls right on acceleration

1985 8-valve 900 n/a
I've been needing to redo my CV joints for the last couple of months, but just haven't gotten around to it. Perhaps they have something to do with this issue.
In any case, the car pulls strongly to the right when accelerating, and when I take my foot off the gas, it pulls back to the left (this has nothing to do with the application of brakes which is smooth and straight). The problem is most noticeable when accelerating from a stop and going up through the gears as I have to get on/off the gas, though I also feel it at speed on the highway when modulating the accelerator. It feels like only one of the front wheels is driving, or something, but there are no strange noises emanating from the axles or gearbox save for tight corners (typical CV noises).
Both front tires are of the same size and inflation. All engine mounts check-out fine. There doesn't appear to be any broken suspension parts - though it would be possible that bushings may be deforming...but I'd not think that would have the right/left behavior I'm feeling - it really acts like a driveline problem.
I'm about to change the axles and CV's on the car but would like some ideas about what I might look for while I'm in there...
Thanks all!
