RESTORE additive

I had lifter noise at start up and for about 2 minutes until warm up, and it seemed to be getting worse. Although I am not a fan of things like motor honey, STP, rislone, zmax, etc., I was thinking of going to heavier oil (10W40 instead of 10W30). I should say it's a 1990 900S n/a w/125,000mi. I'm at the oil shelf and see RESTORE which rings a bell. Saw something in a magazine or on TV, don't remember for sure, but figure I'll give it a shot, and since I'm about 500mi. from next oil change, it'll be coming out soon anyway.
Well, to my surprise, not only are the lifters silent, I feel a definite increase in power and engine seems to run smoother, and the gas mileage is much better! Am I nuts, but can an additive have such a significant effect? And is there a downside to using this stuff? Did I prolong the inevitable? Am I just masking symptoms?
Any answers appreciated.
