What does find it's way through that hole is engine bay heat. When I acquired my used 82 900T, I couldn't help but notice the heat inside the car was considerable, even with the heater core bypassed. The shifter column inparticular would get very hot. Then when I pulled the carpet for replacement I noticed the boot had a large hole in it. Not only engine bay heat, but lots of oil (from leaky oil cooler hoses) made it's way along the shift rod, forced in by the rearward rushing air, and collected on both sides of the foot compartments. The carpeting and padding beneath were soaked with oil. I opted to replace the torn boot with a good used one. I didn't have the tapered pin linkage arrangement, but the bolted collar, so it was easy seperating the shift rod from the tranny. Once replacing the boot, the hard part was realigning the shift rod with the tranny selector rod. Setting it while in 4th gear turned out to be the winning combination.
