Advice on Brakes - 86 SPG

Just had front rotors and calipers on my 86 SPG replaced at dealer (wouldn't pass inspection otherwise -- no good independent shops around here as far as I know). Now I realize that the brake pedal progressively loses pressure at stop lights, and after reading many posts, I'd guess it's probably the brake master cylinder. Here are my two questions:
1. Can I really replace the master cylinder myself without going crazy?
2. Is it SAFE for someone who has very little mechanical experience to try?
One of the reasons I had the original work done professionally is that my daughter rides in the car, and I won't risk her safety. But I get the impression it's easier to screw up the calipers/rotors with deadly results than the master cylinder. Advice please!
