If I were you I would stick with whatever was in the trans before. I'm not sure what came in the trans in '91 (gear oil or motor oil)....probably 10W-30 motor oil though. My '90 owners manual specifies 10W-30. Smell it....a really strong sulfur smell and it's gear lube. I mean really strong. Old motor oil will have a sulfury smell too but not as strong as gear lube.
If the car shifts OK through all gears and you don't have any other problems with it....why mess with it at this mileage? I would just drain and refill with 10W-30, then do that again a few more times to make sure all the old stuff is out. I think on the '91 you will have to take off the rear cover to drain....so you can clean the filter at the same time.
I don't see the point in using any other types of fluid in these transmissions. They are the weak point of the car to begin with and messing around with different stuff in there is just pushing your luck in my opinion. No matter what you put in there it is still going to shift like crap compared to almost any other manual transmission. 2nd is going to be a little notchy, reverse is going to be hard to find sometimes and the throws will be just as long.
I know someone will point you to the townsend site and the use of amsoil gear lube(I think that is what he has recommended). Others will tell you Honda MTF and some Redline MTL. Choose your poison. I don't think anyone has proven anything better than regular motor oil. It's a crapshoot with these transmissions.
Just be easy on it and learn to be a good shifter if you are not already. Let the syncros do the work when up shifting...don't jam or force it into a gear, and after car is completlely at a stop and you are parking it, put it in first or third then go to reverse
I went through the posts here about trans fluid when I first got my car too. It can make your head spin. I actually purchased the Amsoil gear lube. It sat on the shelf in the garage for a while and then I ended up thinking better of it and sold it in the classified section here. Then just changed it with some Castrol 10W-30. The trans was fine then at 80K miles and still is at 140K miles. Why mess with it when it's not broken.
Lets talk engine oil choice now......ha, ha!
Enjoy your new car.....glad to see you here obsessing with the rest of us already ;o) It doesn't take long to find new recruits.
