pull the sender from the tank and verify that the light does illuminate. But me, I'd sneak up on gauge calibration, which you have done and never let it get within 3 gallons of empty.
Note that the more *adjustable* later cars leave the factory with about a 2 gallon safety factor ... the gauge reads "dead empty" with 2 gallons left and the light comes on 2 gallons before that.
