clutch or tranny problem??

I installed a new clutch (incl. pressure plate, slave & bearing, pilot bearing) on my'86 900 nonturbo which has over 300K miles. It ran great for the first 150miles, but not I get a rattling sound and I can;t figure out if it is my 5speed tranny (which occasionally makes noise and has a bad 3rd gear, pops out of reverse, and is generally on its' way out) or if something has gone wrong with the clutch. It is a grinding sound which happens mainly in first & second gear, and does not really happen when I am crusing 50mph+...at idel, when I press the clutch pedal in, the noise goes away, which makes me think the throw-out bearing in the tranny is shot. Ohterwise, could the bearing in the slave cylinder be bad? It seems to be installed correctly and does turn freely. I am loath to pull the clutch out and try a new one, as it was such a SOB to get it installed in there!
ANy other test I can do to isolate the problem? My tranny fluid level is OK (I recently changed it and have been running redline for sometime) but I do notice there are metalic bits in the fluid...as there were lots when I changed it a couple of months ago.
thanks
mark
