compressing hot air only makes it hotter yet.
Pressure ratio is the same whether hot or cold, but the same degree temp rise over the turbo gives more heat to reject in the intercooler. Plus you have less mass flow to begin with. In other words, all things being equal, the turbo has to spin faster and heat more to compress a hotter intake. If you don't believe this, try running ANY turbo car on a 50 degree morning vs an 80 degree morning. BIG difference in performance.

My complaints with the stock system are the air restriction from the horn to the cylinder....too small a horn and too many turns...significant restriction at wot from 4000 rpm up as noted by FilterMinder (TM) pressure drop across the cartridge. There was a very small drop (below the FilterMinder spring-loader piston's ability to signal it) across the amsoil foam filter element I used in the stock airbox with the horn and the tubes removed to the box but then I was back to sucking air from the engine compartment PLUS the BF stock airbox blocked the IC worse than a pure K&N air filter did.

What I would suggest if you insist on a K&N air filter is to use a cylindrical K&N filter (SPG9 or GP6 used to sell them complete with a bracket that bolted onto the stock Saab airbox mounting points) and cover the K&N filter with an Amsoil stock 900T foam filter (remove the foam filter from the wire cage). The amsoil filter is MUCH easier and faster to clean and reoil although it will harden and disintegrate in 5-7 years of under hood operation (gives you an idea of the heat/temps under there!!) but amsoil will replace it under warranty.
