When the brushes get worn down, they can make poor contact. The faster the alternator spins, the more the tendancy for the brushes to bounce on the surface.
If you pull the VR, sometimes you can just replace the brushes (solder in new ones). My approach is to put in a whole new VR. If the brushes are tired, the electronics will be, too. Then, at my leisure, I put a new set of brushes in and keep it on the shelf as an emergency spare.
I'm sure there are good aftermarket VRs. I can't be sure, because I only buy the Bosch. Any manufacturer can make mistakes and I'll get a bad part. But I consider the chances much, much lower with Bosch.
