On my 91, I intermittently have a tough time shifting into first. At worse, it can be completely blocked. Other times fairly decent. All other forward gears okay. Do get the reverse clunk (if I don't shift into 1st, er first, then R), so suspect a failing pilot bearing or cruddy clutch shaft. May be a bit of noise when clutch pedal is depressed.
Shifting alignment as good as I can get it, per Townsend site. Have taken apart 3 torx and 3 funky nuts at shift box: all internal parts pretty good, w/possible exception of leading delrin/rubber bushing which may have very slight play. Motor mounts good.
Usually seems easier when car is slowing rolling forward, or less so when I first shift into 2d and then 1st.
What's the diff between shift "joint" and "coupler"? Round rubber coupler? on linkage is not torn, but if worn/stretching for 1st gear shift, wouldn't I have the same problem into 3rd & 5th?
