Well before work I popped open the fuel pump assy shown below, and I though I'd answer your questions.
I see David got the pump out. Good deal. Mine had 3 tabs that held the bottom of the assy to the rest. I used a screwdriver to pry them and pulled it all apart. There was a filter thing around the pump that just slid right off. I think the pump I have comes from a non-1990 car. I had a simpler plumbing arrangement, IIRC. Anyway, David, you're almost there! just put the new pump in and go.
The float is in fact the level sensor. it has a contact to a small circuit board that says VDO (the guage mfr), and it's a float with a wiper contact.
The model number on the pump is:
SAAB no. 939 4545
The walbro pump inside had the following on it (plus some more)
