If you notice how the hood is designed, there are actually rollers at the windshield end. There have been cases with 'conventional' hoods where in a front end crash, instead of the hood collapsing, it moves backwards as a piece, and acts as a giant blade to decapitate the front-seat passengers. Yuk!
The 900 hood is designed, as Russell said, to slide up and over the windshield. Not only does it keep the windshield somewhat protected, it prevents the hood coming through the windshield.
I was in a head-on crash into a bridge abuttment. The hood did indeed come up over the windshield. The front end was destroyed, but the windshield was intact -not even a crack. My passenger and I opened the doors and stepped out. I love the Saab designs.
