or a combination of any of these, I'd say. You can check by jacking up the car. Then try the ball joints and tie rod ends for play. You can have a look at the a-arm bushings, sometimes are so far gone the bits and pieces stick out of where they belong. The procedure for a ball joint change can easily be found on the board, it's not too difficult. The same goes for tie rod ends. A-arm bushings are more work.
And yes, judging by what you say I think it's pretty serious. I know the symptoms from an '86 8vT I once had and all of the above were pretty well worn. The car wouldn't run straight and corner handling was unpredictable and outright dangerous. One more thing: the a-arms are known to break. Have a look at that also.
