Replacing fuel pump -- '92 900

I'm planning to replace the Walbro fuel pump inside the fuel pump assembly cannister on this car. Looks like this is the way to go based on earlier posts. Would appreciate any tips to help make the project go smoothly.
The car would not restart one day last week, we had it towed and it restarted the next day. Ran fine for another week until it stalled while I was driving it last night and it won't restart. This time I was armed with a jumper wire and switch and a voltmeter. Jumping fuse socket 27 to socket 30 did not make the pump run unlike last week. With the jumper still switched on, there was voltage at the wires that plug into the pump, but the pump was not running -- it seems to me that I can conclude from this test that the pump is dead.
Now I've got to see if I can cobble up a "special tool" to remove the mounting/sealing ring on top of the pump canister...
