Pulled out the voltage regulator yesterday.
The inner brush is visibly shorter than the other. Both are over 5 mm though.
Now I'm faced with the option of buying a new voltage regulator, or finally giving up and having the alternator replaced.
I had the somewhat common problem of others here on the site. Radio started dying/other accessories weakened, battery wasn't charging, battery eventually drained.
I put a new ground wire on and didn't see a change. My next hope was the brushes/voltage regulator. I had a rebuilt put on at the end of last summer, but I don't think it was a Bosch. I was stranded here in Southern Maryland and the local yokel who did the work got the rebuilt alternator from, well, I don't know where he got it from. At the time I didn't know how critical it was to have Bosch.
Anyway, before I throw the VR back in, put in a new battery (to drive it to the guy I feel comfortable with. He's another good ol' boy from down here, but he's honest and thorough. Plus, oddly enough, he and his wife both drive older Mersedes-Benz's. I guess that's the closest I can come. AT least they're European.), I will check the belts. I know, probably should have been one of the first things I checked, but I somehow haven't been thinking straight lately. The car is stranded at the office so maybe I can get to it after work.
I know the guy put new belts on, but maybe they're just a little loose.
Question...
I know there are two belts down there. Do both connect to the alternator? If not, which one does? How do I tighten it (if necessary)? What about if both connect to it, how do I tighten them?
Any suggestions on my situation? Anyone?
