Stiff Steering - how this site saved me $$$ >

Last couple of weeks my steering wheel had gotten to be somewhat hard to turn. It would be stiff-easy-stiff-easy as I turned the wheel. I remembered that a couple of people had written that they had found the problem to be the steering u-joint. They solved it by spraying with penetrant and heating with a hair dryer to allow the grease to reflow into the bearings.
It was quite difficult to get the rubber bellows seal off the steering column from inside the car - a matter of twisting my 6-foot frame into the floor area in front of the seat and peeling it out of the floor with my hands. Screwdriver did not seem to help there. Once out, I sprayed the joint with WD-40 (the joint looked really dirty with old grease and power steering fluid) and then heated it with a hair dryer for about five minutes (lot's of strange looks from the wife and rug rats during this step). Then replace the rubber seal (again pretty difficult but it can be done with your hands).
Drove around the block and it seemed fine - no more stiffness. I have had it out a couple of times since and the fix seems to be semi-permanent.
Thank you all! I shudder to think what Charles River SAAB would have charged to fix that!
