As LM says, it depends on year. The Audi A4 was introduced in 1994 - I'm assuming your brother's car is even newer than that. Very few cars had much on-board diagnostics in the '80's. It wasn't until the mid '90's that real on-board diagnostics became common - mostly due to Federal ODBII mandates.
So depending on how old your OG900 is, readouts vary from very, very littl to really not much.
The LH2.2 (up to and including '88 for the turbo, '87 for the NA) required a special tester that had to be in-line with the ECU, and the car driven with the tester in place. Very limited.
THe LH2.4 (basically, the rest of the OG900 range) codes can be read out via the check engine light, by making a switch contact at the test connector. You could also use a hand-held ISAT tool, which really doesn't do more than just display the codes.
It's not until you get to the NG900 that you start to get some of the fancier diagnostic tools available. But that's also true of just about any other car out there - finding decent on-board diagnostics earlier than about the mid 90's is tough going.
