Eric,
I have a '83 900 Turbo and it does this same exact thing. A few years back I replaced the starter as it was doing this back then. It worked great after that. Now, about 8 years later it has begun again and I already bought a new starter. However, I have noticed that certain conditions need to happen before it gives me any trouble.
1. The engine is always warm, if not HOT (generally a summer day).
2. Sometimes there is an additional electrical load present while trying to start the car. i.e. Hazards are on, radio, lights or fan is on.
I find that if ALL electrical systems are off (that can be off)while starting and that if the engine has had time to cool down then it'll turn right over. Keep in mind the c900 has the starter located directly below the exhaust manifold and Turbo (where applicable). Thus, my theory is that the solenoid overheats and prevents the starter from actuating. Hence the solution is to replace the starter/solenoid unit.
I recommend this repair be done as soon as possible since you may find yourself in a situation similar to a scary movie where you're being chased by some sort of villian and you go to get in your car and it doesn't start.
:-)
