...they were calibrated at one point. (Usually 60 MPH) Speed is a spining cable working against a spring in the unit.
...so, for my money, I would do the speedometer test as JohnB suggests, note RPM and true speed (how many seconds it takes to cover 1 mile) and then calcualte what 4900 rpm means in MPH
Course, anybody out there with a Turbo might be able to answer.
BTW, Turbos have a higher primary drive ratio then non-turbos. (A turbo would turn lower RPM at 60 mph then a non-turbo, by design.) So, if someone swapped tranny's on your turbo with a non-turbo, then your engine would spin faster for a given speed.
