by messing up the mixtures. The engine will get too much air through the failed rubber diaphram and that will cause a lean mixture and eventually an engine stall. Especially typical when shifting gears and quickly releasing throttle and clutching at the same time.
There is a simple check to either confirm or rule it out: the valve is located in the front of the engine, under the rubber hose going to the thermostat on the front end of the engine block. The valve is tucked down under the hose. There is a small rubber vacuum hose going into this (black plastic) bypass valve. The other end of it connects to the inlet manifold. Take off the hose from the manifold and suck/blow into it. If there is resistance, i.e. no leaking, the valve is probably ok. If you can blow through the hose you can be sure the valve has failed.
The replacement turbo bypass valve costs about 40 bucks from a dealer.
Stalling is not typical and can potentially be very dangerous! Remember that if the engine is not running there will be no vacuum going to the brake booster! Just a press or two on the brake pedal and the boosting effect is gone!
