The inner tie rod end (attached to the rack) is replacable. It screws onto the end of the movable portion of the rack and is staked onto it to keep it from rotating off.
You can get inner tie rod ends from sponsors like eEuroparts.com, etc.
rough procedure:
- jack and support the car properly, remove the wheel (gotta say the obvious stuff).
- loosen the locknut on the tie rod and remove the spring clip on the small end of the rubber boot on the rack to make it easy to rotate the inner tie rod without binding up the boot. Don't loosen the locknut too much, you'll want to use as a gauge for how far you need to screw the new one onto the outer tie rod.
- rotate the inner tie rod to unscrew it from the outer tie rod end.
- remove the rubber boot on the end of the rack.
- turn the steering wheel so the rack is fully extended.
- find where the mounting end of the inner rod is staked onto the end of the rack and pry the staked-in part so it's even with the rest of the mounting end and you can unscrew it from the rack. This may not be as easy as it sounds.
- Screw the new one on and stake it onto the rack like the previous one was. Be careful to support the end of the rack when you do this. When you replace the boot, be careful to connect the breather hose on the boot.
- after that, installation is pretty much the reverse of removal.
- Get the wheels aligned.
