Groundhog Day....(long story) Posted by Walt [Email] ![]() ![]() |
Ugh!...what a day....This IS a true story....
I've had some minor problems with a groundhog (woodchuck)living in my yard. A few times in the past year he'd climb into the engine compartment of my 88 base, maybe knock off a vacuum line, or chew on a wire or two. Annoying, but I could live with it. That's life in the country....live in harmony with the beasties.
About two weeks ago, my car was running pretty crappy, so naturally, I looked under the hood to check things out...found the usual muddy footprints, vacuum line knocked off, and several wires chewed up. I've had enough, I don't want to deal with this anymore...time to retaliate.... out comes the garden hose, into the burrow hole, wanna flood the sukka outta here. Maybe he'll go find another hole to crawl into.... somewhere dryer, and far,far away from my cars....
So then I'm away for a one week vacation. Left my 4 door parked in my drive, a bit further away from the hole. Hoping he won't bother it there. I come back home. Next morning I walk into the garage, open the garage door, walk out and start up the ole Saabby. It's running on like one and a half cylinders. Crap. Back it up to get the SPG out of the garage. I see PIECES of my car lying in the driveway!! Insulation from the top vacuum hose, hood insulation, wire loom plastic, and several 2 inch long pieces of wire. Didn't know whether to laugh or cry. Sigh. So I took my SPG, picked up my cats from my sisters, came home and put the SPG safely inside the garage.
Next morning I walk into the garage to see a quanity of chewed rubber behind the SPG by the Garage door. That's IN the garage. Oh sheeeeit...Pull the SPG out, looks okay under the hood, but there's a bunch of greasey footprints on the floor. I know I am not alone. The search begins...Nothing in the corners, then the garbage bag pulled halfway up into the engine compartment of my '67 Fairlane catches my eye. I open the hood, and there's the furball. No guns in the house...a knife is just too grusome, it's just not in me. I settle on the garden hose. A few blasts, and he's a scurrying...he finds a spot under my Craftsman tool chest. Perrrrfect....A few pieces of plywood, and he's boxed in. A few hours later I have him crated up and ready for transport. Figured that was the 'right' thing to do. I take him for a ride in my SPG (kinda ironic, huh?)to his new home by Lake Nockamixon. Find a nice creek, let him out, and I throw a few rocks at him for good luck. See ya...you motha...
One dead Saab. A good day to put my 8 month project car on the road. I get the title transfer and tags, put em on the 89 TAA (Turbo-Automatic-Airflow). and try to start it up. Dead Battery. Gotta jump it. Now it cranks, but won't start. Uh oh. Looks okay under the hood. Fires up the next try. Whew. I go to take off the jumper cables, and see liquid spraying thru the rear wheel. Huh??? smells like gas. ugh. Investigate, and find that some beast had been chewing on the rear crossmember. Yeah, the metal one. Dunno why. But he got the fuel line too. Half the crossmembers under coating is gone. Hope it gave you heartburn, ya bastaaad....
Another hour and a half and I have that replaced.
Now the good news....after working on this project car on and off (mostly off) for the past 8 months, It's finally out for it's maiden voyage. Runs real sweet, with just a few bugs. I expect there'll be some trouble-free miles for a long time...somebody up there owes me a big one.
And by the way, don't park your Saab near Lake Nockamixon, somebody is waiting for you.....
