Stiff/sticking/noisy clutch pedal

I posted a similar message last week and hopefully now, with a little more information, some of you can reassure me I won't break down in the middle of the road.
A couple of weeks ago, I noticed a stiffness in my clutch, sort of like a slight grab when I pushed the pedal in. It also squawks like a crow. This has gotten progressively worse. Now, if the car sits for several hours and I get in and press the clutch pedal, the clutch pedal is so stiff and grabby that it takes so much effort to push it in it feels like something is going to break. After I've driven about five miles with moderate clutch use, this stiffness/grabbiness goes away for the most part.
I suspect this is something to do with the slave cylinder. I had the hydraulic line replaced last week and my mechanic said that should take care of it. It didn't.
So, can someone tell me if A) they've experienced this before, B) am I right to think this is the slave cylinder and C) am I likely to be able to drive it another 25 miles before it gets back to the mechanic tomorrow?
Thanks
