Ok, the timing chain isnt hard to replace, but you have to be SUPER CAREFUL!!! I had my mechanic do it on my 86 900s 3dr 5spd for about 300 bucks, not a bad price. Check out http://www.Townsendimports.com. Tom Townsend is a master tech. and he has a lot of documents on his site about DIY saab-fixin'. There is a page for switching the timing chain. BUT I dont know if its your timing chain. Try replacing the Timing chain tensioner. if you dont know where that is, look in your bently....if you dont have a bently manual, that is #1 on your list of things to do. Order one from Amazon.

also, where are you located? find a mechanic close by and have him listen to it, he is your best ear in this case, but make sure its a saab mechanic! if you take to the firestone, they will tell you its your rotator splint coupling spinning to fast and they have to replace the headgasket and some other load of crap. It happened to me!

good luck
