Had same thing happen last week. the pump overheats when it has to run alot in stop and go traffic. I replaced my pressure accumulator and the problem as stopped. When everything is cool, start your car and wait for the brake warning lights to go out. Then hit the brake pedal hard rapidly and count how many hits it takes for the lights to come on briefly. If 5-6, the pressure accumulator is very weak. If 12 or more, it's still OK. With my old accumulator the lights came on in 6 pumps, and with the new one 17 pumps. The accumulator is not cheap even from site sponsors like sobstory where I bought mine. But installation takes 2 minutes with an 8mm allen socket for a ratchet driver. Before you switch, with the engine off pump the brakes 25 times to remove any pressure from the system...fluid will not spray out if pressure is released.
I guess that when the accumulator can hold more pressure, the pump doesn't have to work so much. I'm sure hot underhood temps make the problem worse. This info came from Ari, a master tech, who posted this info. You can find this info in the previous thread on the subject.
I believe that if your accumulator holds for 12 pumps with no lights, but the lights still come on during hot weather, you might have a pump problem. Or maybe a brake fluid flush might keep you going for a long time. A brake fluid flush always helps get the water out which boils and probably reduces pump and overall system performance.
