Does anyone know of an honest mechanic in Sacramento or Auburn CA? I checked the mechanics page on the site and could not find anyone.

I have an automatic '93 900S that needs a new transmission, new cylinder head gasket and new seals on front oil pump. Quote thus far to install used transmission (which will run $1,000.) and repair aforementioned items is $3,500. No joke. This quote is from the boys at Blackforest Automotive garage in Auburn, CA..an independent garage in a small town where people talk. Head mechanic claims to know more about SAABs than he should and has three in the family. My guess is that he is probably trustworthy, but that price still seems awfully high.

Transmission went out unexpectedly on an uphill grade shortly after the temp needle went into the red....car seemed running just fine until then, did not even have the A/C on. No smoke or fire as I pulled over, the engine fan ran for about 10 minutes, needle began to drop, car started right up, but would not go into ANY gear. I suspect that the problem with the transmission comes from not enough fluid, because I am pretty sure that the fluid has not been changed regularly(an expensive lesson to learn--that when I take the car for an oil change, one needs to ask for transmission fluid to be changed as well--I did not do this) but Larry, the mechanic at Blackforest claims that he cannot tell me what caused the transmission to go out until he begins repair/ takes the "broken" one out. Is this true?

Auburn garage is 35 miles from my home where I am with rental car trying to decide what to do. Would REALLY rather sink less money into it if anyone has any ideas on how I might do this.

Need to act soon because time is running out and I am throwing cash away on rental. I am already a week into trying to figure out ditch or fix and while the mechanic speculates that the car is in pretty good condition otherwise, he is quick to caution me that this is only his speculation.

In March, I paid $300 for new hoses and some other item that I do not recall....beside the point? Not really when we are talking maintenance costs....

Car has $147K (ONLY)

So if anyone can offer help, that would be great. Situation is making me old and bitter, about my car in particular, and I need to act fast because I am wasting money one rental car by the day...
