I made a set of jumper cables literally 30 years ago from #2 welding cable, 20 ft long (total of 40 feet) so I wouldn't have to get nose to nose back in the day when I drove GM cars...don't ask. Oops, Saab is now GM.
They're still flexible and work perfectly. The stuff is what, $1 a foot or so even today. The big issue is getting the terminals attached (mechanical AND solder). As for the wire from the alt to the positive terminal, use some #8 multistrand and crimp/solder eye terminals on it and attach to alternator and bolt on existing positive terminal.
I suspect the saab pos cable is so expensive because it has the alternator pigtail incorporated into the big cable itself?
