S-Works,
Repositioning and/or tightening the clamps has worked before for me. Tom Townsend, SAAB Master Tech and site sponsor, told me he always likes to check the coolant hose clamps when doing anything under the hood. He calls them "minor services," not just oil changes. It's a good habit to pick up. I followed his lead of getting a 1/4" flex-driver and a 7mm socket for it, the size of most all original SAAB 900 clamps, it seems.
FWIW, the heater core on the classic 900 is a bit lower down than the point at which the heater hoses meet the firewall. The hoses actually attach to the in/out tubes on the heater valve, not the heater core directly. The heater core is bolted directly to the underside of the heater valve, inside your dash.
If your repositioning the clamps doesn't help, the heater valve housing might be cracked and leaking, especially if it's one of the plastic ones (it most likely is plastic). If the CORE had a crack in it, and was leaking, your feet would be wet, as the core is totally INSIDE the cabin.
Just curious: how far up on the tubes did you push the heater hoses? If you didn't get them fully seated, or positioned the clamp too far forward (toward the radiator) then it might also be cause for a leak.
My grandpa, a whiz at everything mechanical, swears by putting what he calls "pipe dope"--a thick, black, tar-like goo--on heater hose connections during installation, for added sealing protection, but I haven't done this on a SAAB. It works well, apparently, as his 1966 Jeep CJ-5 and a 1976 Chevy K-10 both required new heater hoses and he applied this stuff before the new hoses in place. (If you go to the parts store, ask for it, and get a weird look, though, don't blame me...)
