Fuel/Spark/Tach but no Start

I've got an '89 900 turbo convertible that I've been doing major work on. Swapped a bad auto tranny with a good 5-spd and all associated parts from a donor car, replaced the turbocharger with a rebuilt, and replaced the head gasket.
Now I've got spark on all my plugs, fuel going in (exhaust gets warm after prolonged cranking and plugs smell of fuel), and the tach moves slightly when I crank, but there's no start - just some backfiring. I was very careful during the head gasket job to keep the timing correct, and several rotations of the engine confirm the timing mark on the flywheel at TDC lines up with the cam TDC marks. I checked the distrubutor and all the wires are in the right place, I never even removed them from the cap. I don't have a timing light but I set the distributor in a position identical to another working 900 I have - that might produce rough running without timing it properly but would it produce no start whatsoever?
I'm stumped as to the no start, but hopefully it is something I reconnected wrong during the engine removal-reinstallation. Can anyone point me out in the right direction to begin troubleshooting this?
