I'm confused. Not a good place to be if planning to tackle an AC recharge, but seem's to be more from mixed signals.....
I have 2 SAAB 900's. First is a '91 900T ragtop, dealer maintained. AC works fine; there's a note on the compressor to only use the "D" port (upper)that has the red cap and would appear to access the upper line that stays cold and leads to the unit by the air intake.
I have an '85 SPG (290K mi) that had a compressor with a cracked base, so I pulled one off (my '85 900T) parts car. Didn't drain all the oil when I did the job last fall. Never recharged the system; planned to do so now.
I purchased one of those 3 can R-134a retrofit AC conversion kits from the local discount house. Looks like I'm gonna have to purchase a separate high side port adapter, but's that's another matter. In their instructions, they say the low side service port is located on the hose that stays cool and may usually be found between the compressor and the evaporator. From tracing the Haynes diagram, this would appear to be the low pressure vapor line leading to evaporator, which would be the unit by the fresh air intake. They tell you only to connect to the low side, do it with the can upside down, engine running, etc.
So.....is the low side as they suggest, the cold one, and the one to access, and do I need to pull the compressor, manually drain out the oil then recharge, or can there be some of the old R12 oil in there?
Thanx,
Jon
