Pre-pump is also called "feeder" pump and "supply pump." If you only replaced the main fuel pump, it's one less thing to worry about but it won't fix the stalling-below-1/2-tank problem.
Randy is most likely correct. I had the same thing happen on my first '84S. It was the pre-pump (which I didn't know about because the stupid Haynes manual and Chilton 900 books--my only manuals at the time--don't mention it! They only mention a single fuel pump!).
You've already been inside the tank, if you did the fuel pump job yourself, so it shouldn't be that hard to do the pre-pump. Mine was about $65 (filter/strainer below pump is separate item), but that's about 3-4 years ago. Check site sponsors here for good prices.
