George,
I think one might just be able to repair these vacuum canisters. (Sure, it might be a bit involved, but probably a lot cheaper than a new canister!)
My background: an early 1980s SAAB technical service bulletin showed how to pop off the cap which covers/contains the check valve and trim 1.5 turns off the check valve's spring--this fix was for the complaint of noise from the canister during startup. This is how I know the check valve can be disassembled, if you use care. My fix DOES NOT involve trimming the spring, unless the noise get on your nerves. I'd heat up the canister's check valve area until it's warm to the touch before prying off the cap because even at 70-80°F, old plastic can be brittle. The warmer it is, the less likely it will break--same with 8V CIS fuel lines...
My theory: once the check valve is disassembled, you could replace the aging rubber diaphragm inside the check valve--if that is indeed where the leak is, after all, canister could be cracked elsewhere. After you take off the check valve cover, you then take a piece of bicycle innertube and cut a circular portion to match what came from the SAAB check valve. Glue in place, reassemble, and voila! No more leaks. I haven't tried it, however, but have had this idea brewing in my brain for some months.
As far as leaks in other canister locations, you could take off the check valve, plug the other hole in canister, and pump air at LOW pressure (5 psi or less) into the canister with canister submerged in a bucket of water. If leaks are present, they will emit a stream of bubbles from the leak point. Remove and mark them with crayon, etc. and dry the canister. Then spread epoxy over the leaky points and the canister should be good as new!
What do y'all think? Is this feasible/possible?
