You are supposed to do it early on and then they seem to stay adjusted. The dealer did mine when the car was new--maybe 1K or 5K miles and that was it until I had them adjusted last year at 150K. The thing runs like a train and the valves are all fine. They use shims, and I think you need to get the ones you need from a dealer, indy or parts place.
Probably someone who has done it more than twice can give you more info.
