It's a tiny C-clip on the inside (below radio) that holds the knob in place.
Under the knob is also a ball and spring that flies all over when looking the other direction.
For me that have done it several times, I can get the knob, ball and spring back together and push the C-clip over the shaft working through the radio hole. But it's not easy.
It is also a newer rod out that is a tad longer, depending on what year your car is. I think the new rod was installed around the 90s.
