Thanks very much Don J of Bremerton for your helpful advice. I'm sure it will come in handy in a year or two. On closer inspection, I discovered that the "stick in reverse" condition was just a Red Herring. It seems I am so paranoid from years of Saabs to hit reverse before key removal, that I missed a simple sticky and worn ign switch. I found that, no matter how deep stick is in Reverse, jiggling key in switch frees it to turn. Shot some WD-40 in the switch and worked it around well, and problem is sol-ved, as Inspector Clouseau used to say.
I found a very good '89 SPG with 97k miles a year ago, so it feels and runs like a new car to me. However, we all know that many minor and niggling problems and failures begin cropping up after 100,000 or so, even in Saabs, so I am just now coming due for some.
Thanks again for your suggestions.
