An update might be appropriate: yesterday when the performance returned after filling the tank I thought that it pointed to the obvious, ie bad pump. Upon checking this AM I found that the car has a Walbro pump which doesn't have a prepump but instead uses the return flow to operate a venturi type device to draw additional fuel from the tank into the pump cannister similar to the pre-pump but w/o the aditional motor. OK, maybe the venturi is bad. I have spent a LOT of time in the northern states this past winter where the alchohol content runs ~ 10%, so maybe the line to the venturi has rotten away.
However, when I went out today the stumbling under load was back, until, remarkably enough, I had driven the same distance I had to fill the tank yesterday. Then the stumbling went away just like yesterday.
The distance/time is too far for it to be the heatup cycle for the O2 sensor so I'm wondering if it is more engine temp related, rather than fueling per se. Or could the ECU be loosing what little memory it has of previous running conditions and take that long to recalibrate itself. As I recall the manuals state that it may be up to 30 minutes before the ECU will establish a new steady state program.
In any case I will be pulling the pump this PM to check the internal hoses and the pickup screen.
FYI: all tuneup bits were replaced as of Dec last year; fuel/air filter, rotor/cap/wires/plugs (bcp7es), throttle body and AIC cleaned 2 days ago, all vacumm lines replaced, inc the little hidden piece down by the ELCD.
