The airmass meter is an ingenious device and I've never had one fail on the many Saabs I've owned. It is simple, elegant, and reliable.
The AMM measures the mass of the air getting to the engine. But if you have an intake leak, the engine is getting more air then the AMM is telling the computer it is getting. As a result the computer might say the AMM is faulty.
If you have a leak PAST the AMM, then you might have these symptoms. Look for vacumn leaks, leaks at the charcoal canister, intake hose clamps loose.
If your vacumn hoses are over 5 years old, you should replace them. They are likely to be the cause.
As for as idle hunting, that's related and also possible the idle control valve. I had a similar problem, removed the idle control valve, cleaned it with gasoline and lubed with dry graphite lock lubricant. Worked great.
