You should have two fans running together when the gauge gets to about 3/4 (the trigger point, don't know the exact temp). I can't remember which side comes on after the key is off??? But anyways, you should have two fans pulling air over the radiator when the temp triggers them, with the key on. One of mine stopped working, and a relay was to blame. Apparently the motor's themselves are durable units (according to my mech), and don't fail too often.
Even though you flushed your radiator, it sure sounds like a radiator problem that may warrent replacement (and a fan fix of course).
