turbo breakdown Posted by dan [Email] ![]() ![]() |
here's a stumper: I have an '89 non-turbo engine with a turbo added stuffed in a '76 99EMS. I replaced the turbo with a fairly new one I had lying around here when I put the engine in the 99 because the intake fins were ground away somehow. I looked everywhere when the engine was out of the car and found nothing but tiny metal filings in the intake piping from the Air Mass Meter to the turbo. I was adjusting the front height of the engine mount when I decided to have a look at the new turbo...ground to nothing. This time there is some pitting on the housing (there wasn't anything on the last turbo) but the major damage is just on the front portion of the fins, as if someone had held a pipe against them while the turbo was spinning. No marks on the not that holds the fins to the shaft and no marks on the fins that sit further back. The damage is pretty coarse. I'm totally stumped. Before I put another turbo on this thing, I've got to figure this out. The AMM is all there, the filter is an intact KNN. There is nothing in the small pipe that goes into the pipe from the engine side (the one that has a coolant line that comes from the throttle) and there is no apc...the hose inlet is capped. Any thoughts out there...there isn't anything I can think of yet it has done this twice. I feel stupid enough having toasted a second...help me figure this out before I am forced to end it all with a ruined third.
