Fascinating and thanks! In this case, I believe it's worse than that, from what I've been told. Not just jumping out of reverse, but a really huge THUMP (a head-turner in car parks!) and and jump, cyclic, every 2 secs or so. According to the shop that had been servicing this car, a tooth is broken off a wheel somewhere down inside there, and since reverse is the last gear in the box, a rebuild would be $3500. The slightly lower price was for exchanging the old box complete for a recon one.
Having driven two slightly later 900Ts back in the late 80s in England and loved them to bits, and never having had a single fault on either, I've returned to them here in the USA and am having to accept that SAABs do have problems after all!
Incidentally I recall the turbo on the 8v UK cars being a lot more impressive than it is here in California - I used to get a burst of acceleration back then that doesn't seem to be there, here ... I am wondering if this is something to do with the smog controls? The other cars used to leap away when the turbo kicked in, but here it is a far smoother and less exciting progression.
Thanks
Chris
