Problems with '89 900S in heat

I have a 1989 900 S, non-turbo, and have encountered problems with the car mysteriously cutting off while driving or idling on very hot days here in Texas. We recently went through a cooler period where the car did not act up at all, but it's back to it's old tricks again.
While driving I can usually pop the clutch a few times and the car restarts, but if I'm idling and lose the car and have to use the key to crank, it takes 15-20 cranks before the car will turn over, sometimes with some awkward noise from the starter. Sometimes the car won't crank, but if I let it sit for a few hours, it cranks right back up upon my return. I've also noticed the car sometimes cuts off when I pass over a bump.
My suspicion is that something is faulty with the fuel pump system, but I thought I'd see if anyone else has had similar problems. I recently replaced the water pump to correct overheating issues, which was successful, but I had this problem before that repair took place as well, so I don't think they are related. Thoughts, comments?
