Well, actually three.
About 2 months ago, my 89 spg failed to start. I ran every test I could in bently, replaced the air mass meter and ignition control module. No joy.
I bought a used engine control module from ebay. Car started, but had an extremely poor idle until the car heated up to the point where the O2 sensor could overcome the reference signal from the ecm, then the car ran just fine. Thanks to Townsend's site, I found a Tech service bulletin that referenced this same problem for some of the early engine contol modules.
So I bought a used (and guaranteed, thank god) Engine Control Module. Joy -- the car started, idled and ran perfectly. For 2 weeks. Now, the same failure. The car won't start. The failure mode seems slightly different -- this engine control module does trigger the fuel pump relay, but still no start. Swapping engine control modules with the faulty ebay computer allows the car to run crappy at idle until car warms up. I did nothing else to the car in the meantime.
The question, after all this is: Am I somehow blowing up computers? There are no obvious shorts or bare wires, and all the grounds are solid. I have not given anyone a jump start, disconnected or charged the battery, or anything else that could cause a power surge. I replaced all ecm using the proceedure in bently (wait at least 40 seconds). I doubt my neighbors are experimenting with electromagnetic pulses, and I'm too far from Fermilab's particle accelerator to suspect stray boson particles.
