The connector on my '89 SPG is under the back seat.
I just went out and checked mine: the light stays on for about 5 seconds when it turn the key to the RUN position. It has an ECU from a '90 900T. IIRC, it did the same thing with the original '89 ECU and an ECU from a '90 900S.
Shooting from the hip, I'd guess that it's an ECU problem.
If you have quick access to a pick-n-pull, run out and get an ECU from an '88 or '90 900S or a '90- 900T. '88 9000S and early '89 9000T will also work. These are all LH 2.4 ECUs and I've found that many of them work in my '89. If you get one from a 900S or 9000S, swap in the EPROM from your 900T to get the same fuel mapping. Use all of the normal static precautions that you'd use putting memory chips on a PC motherboard (now, does *that* date me or what? :-)
Avoid '89 ECUs unless you can't find anything else because they're kinda chancy.
These ECUs are usually fairly cheap at P-N-Ps.
