84 and earlier turbo Saabs still used the 8 valve engine. Find one in a junkyard and get all the parts. You'll need an oil return pipe (turbo drain) from a 16v turbo as the 88 8v uses the same block as the 16v.
The non-turbo engines use higher compression pistons, so you won't be able to safely run as much boost as a factory turbo setup. But 5 lbs of boost will bring your 8v alive. Search the Performance board for 'LPT'....(low pressure turbo)
I'll be doing the conversion soon on my '88 base.
