Hey John-
Depending upon how decent the body is (rust, rust, rust and rust), I'd say you got a great deal!
I bought an '87 (oil cooled Turbo vs. your H2O cooled, and various electrical differences, brakes etc. - '88 is a good a year by the way), for $3000 with a decently straight shiny body and a tatty interior / mechanicals.
To date (I purchased the car 18 months ago) I have put +$8000 into it (on top of the purchase price) bringing it back to "as new" cosmetic and more importantly mechanical condition (leather, motor, trans, electricals, turbo, and on and on..). So that's a worst case scenario for ya (sorry)! Having said that although, I gladly paid the 11K, as it was far cheaper than a new 9-3, and just as reliable with all it's bits replaced (plus most shops give you a one year warrantee on the work / parts they preformed / replaced, if yours doesn't find a new one!!!), and I know exactly what I have - no surprises is great!
My only suggestion for you would be to find a trusted mech in your area and spend a good couple of hours doing an inspection. That way you can prioritize what needs to be done (as there will always be something), and you won't be blinded by huge unexpected bills (hopefully).
Check the top assembly (pull out the bottom of the back seat), and inspect the pump / lines for any signs of fluid leakage. If you already have a nice interior and the top hasn't been used in a while (which you need to operate the top at least once a month, no matter what the outside temp is, to keep everything used to moving - my mech's advance), it could start leaking all over the rear compartment carpet!
Sounds like a great deal John! Any pictures?
Jeff
